About Marie Angeli, CMA
Hello. My name is Marie Angeli. I am a student of comparative culture and the arts, religion, magick, mythology, herbalism and horticulture, and classical astrology, sometimes called Traditional astrology. I was born a ‘natural’ psychic.
Magickal work has been a part of my life since very early in my adolescence. I was driven to search for other ways of looking at things, because I began having visions of ‘spirit beings’ or ‘angels’ at a very young age. I attended my first working at the age of 12, and began to work with divination at 14. Most of this was done in secret, as my family of origin, although nice people, were quite uncomfortable when I tried to tell them some of the things I was seeing. I soon kept it to myself.
I have some suspicions that my family history includes traditional folk magick, as some of the lore I learned from my paternal grandmother was folk magick in nature, although she’d be the first to deny it. Like many families, ours had physical artifacts of a magickal practice that had been lost over the generations. Since my paternal ancestors were part Irish, and my maternal ancestors were Scots-Irish, this blend of magick and ‘seeing’ should be no surprise to anyone. As well, there is a definite and strong thread of the Western Mystery Tradition within the family, which is esoteric Christianity blended with High Ritual Magick. The apple falls not far from the tree. ![]()
After an early life spent among musicians and artists, and University work in the fine arts, I turned to my other love: the study of traditional martial arts and laying on of hands healing. As time went on, the energy work of the healing, and the mystical world it opened up to me drew me into researching other cultures, other religions than the one of my birth. Many things happened to me and to my clients in healing work that convinced me that tremendous energy lay waiting to be tapped by a skilled worker, and I determined that I needed more disciplined training in the metaphysical field. Up to this time, I’d been using divination on and off as a fun and occasionally profitable game from childhood, however as I delved deeper into the metaphysical field, my psychic skills came into demand. As a favorite friend recently said, God gives you gifts so that you can USE them.
I officially hung up my shingle and did the first readings of my professional career in my early twenties when friends asked me about some business decisions. I walked outside the house, picked up a half dozen tiny stones, read them, and gave my friends the advice they sought. For some I read fallen leaves, depending on the ‘feel’ of the question. Afterwards I was given very positive feedback, and several others were referred to me. Thus began a multi-decade profession that has supported me and my family on and off, and drawn me into explorations of many different faiths and belief systems. During this time I studied and worked with the Tarot, practiced the ancient art of palmistry, worked with pendulums, and of course, always always worked with my stones, crystals, and ultimately, with the tool of deep working, the crystal ball. Although the crystal ball has become a thing of misunderstanding and ridicule, due to the misrepresentations of Hollywood and a gullible media, the crystal work itself is ancient and a beautiful thing. For me it led to a practice of reading water in oil, ink in water, the dark mirror, and of course, melted wax both from the candle and dropped into a bowl of water. I saw all of these practices as a way of focusing my native intuitive skills. My work has always been prefaced by a prayer for guidance that I might Serve. My approach is always influenced by an earnest desire to help others.
I have been photographed for the Herald Examiner, written about in the LA Times, and filmed for VH1 as I gave readings to folks in the entertainment industry, and many others who sought me out. Since I worked for so many years on a sliding scale donation basis, no one was turned away due to poverty. When I moved across country in my late thirties, the environment demanded a much more ‘professional’ approach, and fees and appointments were set.
Sometime after 2003, after another decade and a half of seeing clients, I began a Sabbatical from my professional reading to devote myself to the serious study of astrology. The astrology has always been a part of my experience, especially as a magickal practitioner. I began my magickal training shortly after my work in laying on of hands healing, and have continued to work in various disciplines for over 35 years. I have studied Wicca, both Dianic and Traditional, Druidry, Runework, and Native American practices, mostly from Navaho and Hopi traditions. I have also deepened my understanding of Zen Buddhism, Tantric Buddhism, Islam, and have done coursework in Christian Theology. Since about 1997, I have worked with the Holy Kabbalah, and High Ritual Magick, and tried to develop myself and better my skills as an energy practitioner and healer.
Now, in addition to the Kabbalistic work, I am also studying the American version of hoodoo, and practical folk magick practices that use many different techniques from the African Diaspora, as well as hereditary European and Native American techniques. I am not the only Anglican who has looked into these practices, certainly, as one of the most valuable records we have of them was made by an Oxford educated Anglican priest named Harry Middleton Hyatt in the mid-20th century. You can learn more about this field and about H.M Hyatt from Catherine Yronwode’s Hoodoo in Theory and Practice.
I was pulled into reexamining this folk type of magickal work by my work with herbs, and am now also a student of Herbalism. I am a Master Gardener, and thus my interest in that which grows, and the natural balance of green life. Lastly, I continue my work with Astrology, which is a lifetime practice. To learn more about my work in astrology, and my interest in lunar gardening, search this blog for ‘lunar gardening’ or watch for the Moon Units.
As I now pass my Croning, my fiftieth year, I find that many things are coming together for me. It is clear that I will always be a student. But I have been called out of Sabbatical by my ‘voices’ to work in Service once again. This blog is part of that work for me.
There is much information about these cultural practices of witchcraft, divination, and folk magick, that is manipulative, hostile, ridiculing, and downright ignorant. And we fear those things of which we are ignorant I offer the information in these pages freely, that it may be of help to anyone who seeks it. I will also be opening a metaphysical online store and publishing some more in depth witchery information for those who would like a deeper experience. It is my hope that the store and the publications will serve you, and as well will enable me to further my own studies, so that I can continue to be of some use!
I hope that my posts are informative to you, the reader. Please feel free to email me at any time at info (at) newmoonoldmagick.com and ask questions or request a post on certain subjects that interest you. I cannot promise to answer all emails personally, however if there is a concern that I can address, I will do so in my blog, and if I cannot help, I will do my best to refer you to someone who can. I’m also interested in your stories about your lives and work, and would love to write about the witches and magicians, the fey and the druids, the hoodoo and the priests who honor me by telling their tales.
Blessed be to all.
